Abstract
The article examines the quality o f teaching using teacher-developed video materials, which can contribute to students ’ learning autonomy in mastering academic disciplines in an asynchronous mode. The research was conducted using case studies o f the use o f instructional videos from a series of courses entitled “Methods o f Teaching Foreign Languages", “English Media Literacy ", and “Practical English Grammar" at Uman State Pedagogical University during the period o f martial law. The study covers both the practice o f creating video materials and students ’ perception o f this technology. A mixed-methods survey was conducted among first-, second, and third-year students o f the Faculty of Foreign Languages to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. The results show that a significant proportion o f participants rated the video materials positively, recognising flexibility o f access and clarity of instructions as the main advantages. The main disadvantage was the lack o f live dialogue and real-time feedback. The production o f video materials offered several professional benefits: creating a reusable content library, developing digital competencies, discovering asynchronous interaction tools (Mentimeter, Canva, Padlet), and tracking student activity through view analytics. At the same time, the lack o f interactive dialogue remains the most significant structural drawback. It was concluded that video lessons are an effective and meaningful tool for asynchronous learning, especially in emergency situations, but they work best as a supplement to interactive learning rather than a substitute for it.
