Abstract
Double negation (also known as negative concord) was a common feature in Old English (OE) and continued into Middle English (ME). It is the use of more than one negative word in a sentence to express a single negation. In contrast to Modern English, where double negatives often result in a positive meaning (e.g., “I don’t know nothing” meaning “I know nothing”), double negatives in Old English typically reinforced the negation rather than canceling it out.
